How to use meditation to gain insight:

1. Make the time. Meditation requires practice and regular effort. Early morning and late evening seem to work the best. But 15 minutes at lunch can work, too. The more time you can spare the better, but as little as 15 minutes is enough.

2. Find a quiet place.It’s possible to meditate under any conditions, but it’s much easier if you’re alone in quiet surroundings.

3. Find a comfortable position.Any position can work, provided you can maintain it without fidgeting. The full lotus position can be maintained for a very long period of time, but most beginners lack the flexibility to assume this position. Try various positions. Sitting up straight in a firm chair often works well.

4. Relax. Once you’ve found a comfortable position, breathe and relax. It doesn’t get much simpler than that. But simple isn’t the same as easy.

5. Focus on your breath. Maintain a focus on your breath. Feel the air moving in and out of your body. Why is meditation so focused on the breath? Because it’s

happening right now. It’s part of your experience in the present.

If you maintain awareness of your breathing, you can’t be thinking about anything else. And that’s exactly the goal: to stop your mind from thinking.

6. Continue to maintain focus on your breath. Invariably, your attention will wander. How long it takes to realize you’ve lost your focus will vary. With practice, it will only take a few seconds. At first, it may take several minutes!

When you do catch yourself thinking, simply notice it and bring your attention back to your breath. Avoid beating yourself up when your concentration is less than you’d like. Continue returning to your breath.

7. Apply the same idea to your daily life. While driving, keep your mind 100% on driving. While you’re washing the dishes, do the same. When your mind wanders, bring it back to your current activity. You’ll be amazed at the peacefulness it brings to your life.

8. Enjoy the benefits. When you’re talking to others, you’ll be able to clearly see the reality of the situation by being fully present. You’ll gain insights to people and situations that you never knew existed.

You can apply the same practice to the challenges in your life. You’ll see the truth and solutions will present themselves to you.

9. Understand what’s really happening.You’ve always been provided with insight, but your overactive mind, beliefs, opinions, and preconceptions have been getting in the way. Meditation clears away all of this noise and bias. You’re then able to experience true insight.

Allow yourself the advantage of all the insight available to you. Although it’s effective, meditating can take some time to master. You might not feel that you’re gaining any benefits at first. Keep at it. You’ll be well-rewarded for your efforts.

My mind is actively engaged when I read. Afterward, I process and reflect on the material with an open mind.

Encountering beliefs that challenge my own encourages me to research the unknown. In this manner, my reading is augmented by peripheral texts and new venues of literature. I reinforce my knowledge while availing myself to different opinions. Mentally, I gain the ability to see multiple sides of a position.

New ideas sometimes influence my perception, and I develop new methods of contemplating everyday events.

I treat the act of reading the same as Martial Arts physical exercise. That I perform it regularly. Just like my Martial Arts exercise routine, I introduce new material to avoid stagnation. When my day is full, I search for small opportunities to read.

My cognitive strength increases with each day.

Today, I look forward to reading something new. I can experience exciting adventures, thoughts, and ideas just by opening a book or with the click of my mouse.

Reading expands my mind and brings me joy. Books surround me. They are a special type of friend to me. I am comforted and relaxed when I read each day. Reading is more than a hobby. It is an integral element of my daily life just like Martial arts.

Reading provides an escape from a tough day and introduces me to great adventures.

I love the idea that I can learn something new when I open a book. Whether it is a fictional story or a true account of someone’s life, great lessons lie within the pages. I read to expand my mind and find a peaceful moment of joy during the day.

To me, a day without reading is like a day without Martial arts or breathing. I am compelled to move forward in whatever book I am reading. The quiet contentment I gain from reading is unmatched by anything else I do each day.

Stories excite, enlighten, and enthrall me. Visualizing the scenes from a book allows me to tap into my creative side.

Today, I plan to read for at least one hour. Diving into an interesting story educates me and brings joy into my life. Each book seems like a special gift to me. I feel lucky to have so many wonderful books all around me.

Much of our happiness and success is the result of our thinking. So, too, are our failures. And our thoughts are revealed in our self-talk. What you say to yourself during the course of the day largely determines the outcome.

In theory, it’s really pretty simple:

  • Positive self-talk leads to success.
  • Negative self-talk dooms you to failure.

Which one are you setting yourself up for?

Like an evil mist, negative thinking has an insidious way of weaving its wispy tendrils into our thoughts and words. Over time, it becomes a habit – so much so that you might not even notice it. But you can’t help but notice the result: failure, time and time again.

The solution is to develop new habits in your thinking.

Let’s examine several ways to combat these negative thought processes and develop new, positive thoughts that will better serve you.

When you’re good at recognizing these flaws in your self-talk, you’re 90% of the way there:

  1. “I can be happy once I …” It’s a mistake to believe that you need to have or do anything before you can be happy. As soon as the criterion is met, another will simply take its place. It’s great to strive for more, but to make your happiness dependent on such attainment will delay your happiness forever.
  1. The success of other people makes you jealous or resentful. The flaw is thinking that only a limited number of people can experience success.
  • Learn to admire others that are successful. Learn from their success and be happy for them. You can be successful, too.
  1. “I can’t do anything right” or “I’ll never be successful.” Mistakes are simply a learning method of how not to do something. Humans learn largely via ‘failure’. The most successful people have failed far more times than the average person. The difference is that they discover how to pick themselves back up again so they can go on to succeed.
  • Remind yourself of all the times you’ve succeeded at something in the past.
  • For example, learning to talk and walk were difficult endeavors. Consider how many times you failed at both of them and yet you were successful in the end. What if you had the same level of perseverance for everything else in your life?
  1. “Why do these things always happen to me?” Over the long haul, life is remarkably fair. Bad things happen, but they tend to pass and good things take their place. To believe that you are singled out for bad things is a critical error that can guide you toward more negative circumstances.
  2. “I can’t do this.” It’s difficult to do something that you believe you can’t. In reality, you can do nearly anything, given enough time and effort.
  • Can you improve a little bit today? Of course you can, and you can keep improving each day. How could you not be able to do something if you never give up?
  1. “I’ll do it tomorrow (or next week).” We often let ourselves off the hook by putting things off into the future. Successful people are great at doing what needs to be done. They simply do the things others don’t have the nerve to do.
  • Be brave and claim your success today – not someday.
  1. Any other negative self-talk. There’s a simple way to know if your thinking is on track. You should be happy, motivated, and enthusiastic to attack your goals. If you don’t feel this way, then you have negative thoughts in your head. Find and resolve these thoughts.

Monitor yourself continuously for negative thought patterns. When they occur, intentionally turn the thought around into something positive.

Most of your negative thoughts have little reality supporting them – they merely have the power of repetition on their side. You can override that with repetition of new, positive thoughts.

You have the power to transform your life. Imagine what you could do if you banished all negative thoughts from your mind. Nurture yourself with positive self-talk and enjoy the success you deserve!

Martial Arts Habits That Improve Focused

Unless you’re a Buddhist monk, you encounter distractions from time to time that minimize your effectiveness in getting your work done.

The internet is especially disrupting with email, messages, status updates, and more. But distractions also include co-workers, family, and our own wandering minds. It seems that we dawdle our lives away five minutes at a time.

The big question is how to defeat this tendency. How can you make use of the Internet constructively without falling victim to its distractive qualities?

Try turning these strategies into daily habits that help you become more efficient and effective:

1. Use time limits. When we set a time limit, we improve our ability to focus. It almost becomes a game of ‘beat the clock’. Ideally, you should use a timer and limit your work periods to around 25 or 55 minutes – with a 5-10 minute break in between tasks. If a task is going to take longer than 55 minutes, break it down into smaller chunks.

• Having a time limit also forces you to do the most important parts of any work. If you only have an hour, you’re going to have to decide what’s most important. This is much better than deciding to simply work on something until it’s done. Decide how long it should take, and then set the timer.
• If you have any sort of attention challenge, using a timer can increase your ability to keep your mind on the task at hand. The time flies by, and you’ll get more done. You’re likely to even find it relaxing, since you’ll be focused on what you’re doing instead of thinking about 20 other things.
Research has shown that the most productive schedule for most people is:

o 50 minutes of work
o 10 minute break
o 50 more minutes of work
o 30 minute break (You might not be able to get away with a 30-minute break at work, but it’s a good time to get up, walk around, and get a drink.) Repeat

Time your breaks. If you decide to check your email or do one of those other tasks that seem to magically go from 5 minutes to 30 minutes or more, using a timer will serve as a reminder. It will also force you to only check on the most important things.

2. Close everything that can be closed. Everything on your computer that isn’t necessary for the task at hand should be closed down. If you don’t need the internet, shut it off. That includes all your email, notifications, games, and blogs. Close your door and unplug the phone, if possible.

• Nothing is going anywhere – it will all still be there when you’re done. One of the keys to being more effective is eliminating the things that make us less effective.

3. Insert a pause, as needed. When you first implement these habits, there will be times that you will have an incredible urge to check your email, Facebook, or Twitter.

• Before you succumb to the urge, take 10 seconds and pause. Take a long, deep breath and ask yourself if you really want to waste your time on something that is largely meaningless, or if you’d rather accomplish something worthwhile.
The ability to focus has been largely lost for many of us. However, these easy habits, which anyone can do, can go a long way toward improving your focus and effectiveness at any task.

It’s likely to be challenging at first, but you can do it. You can get more done, in less time, by learning to improve your focus and avoiding the things that waste your precious time.

Put these three habits into play starting today. You’ll be impressed by how much more you can get done!

Reading expands your mind and brings you joy.

Books should surround you. They are a special type of friend for you. Be comforted and relaxed when you read each day. Reading is more than a hobby. It is an integral element of my daily life.

Reading provides an escape from a tough day and introduces me to great adventures.

I love the idea that I can learn something new when I open a book. Whether it is a fictional story or a true account of someone’s life, great lessons lie within the pages. I read to expand my mind and find a peaceful moment of joy during the day.

To me, a day without reading is like a day without breathing. I am compelled to move forward in whatever book I am reading. The quiet contentment I gain from reading is unmatched by anything else I do each day.

Stories excite, enlighten, and enthrall me. Visualizing the scenes from a book allows me to tap into my creative side.

Today, I plan to read for at least one hour. Diving into an interesting story educates me and brings joy into my life. Each book seems like a special gift to me. I feel lucky to have so many wonderful books all around me.
