1. Control your thoughts. It’s possible to think about anything you choose. The best way to stress yourself is to think about stressful things. You’re not more effective when you’re afraid. You’re less. That doesn’t mean you should bury your head in the sand, but put yourself in a frame of mind that makes you most able to deal with the situation.

2. Consider the worst. Take a moment to consider the worst likely outcome. Can you handle it? Can you maneuver in a way that makes the worst outcome manageable? If you know you can handle the worst, there’s no reason to be afraid.

* Be prepared for the worst and you’ll find it rarely occurs.

3. Breathe. Focus on your breath and slow your mind. Your mind will take reality and run wild with it. Focusing on your breath will calm your mind, and reality remains. When stress is at your doorstep, just stop and breathe.

Fear of failure can alter every choice we make. This fear can be helpful. Some of us are able to use the fear of failure as motivation to do our best work. However, most of us are influenced by this fear in a negative way. We often change our plans altogether and find an alternative that feels safer. This is a sure way to limit your results and experience feelings of regret.

Put the fear of failure behind you:

1. Understand that failure part of the process. You’re very lucky if you figure out the right way to do something with your first effort. Short-term failure is much more common. Anytime you want to accomplish something significant, you can expect failures to be part of the process. Keep improving your process until you’re successful.

2. Realize that failure is only a temporary condition. A single failure isn’t a permanent condition. Failure is like a rainy day. Sunny days always show up again.

3. Find something meaningful. With enough motivation, fear isn’t an issue. For example, if you’re feeling overly bashful at work, maybe you aren’t working in the right field or with the right company for you. When you have enough passion for something, fear is much easier to overcome.

4. Failure isn’t personal. Failing only means that your approach wasn’t the best option. It doesn’t say anything about you as a person. Even the most talented people deal with failure on a regular basis. A wrong choice isn’t indicative of a fatal flaw.

5. Stay present. You can’t worry if your mind isn’t living in the future. It’s only when you project a negative outcome that you become anxious. Reality is happening right now. The future is only a daydream. If you’re going to think about the future, imagine success. At this very second, you’re okay. You’ll be okay in the next second, too.

6. Learn to enjoy fear. If your life isn’t in danger, being afraid is a sign that you’re doing something new. Only new behaviors will change your life. No one wants to live the same day repeatedly. That uncomfortable feeling is a sign that something amazing might happen.

7. Minimize fear by taking action. The people that are most afraid tend to be the most paralyzed, but they didn’t start out that way. You weren’t born afraid of the things that you fear today. But by giving in to fear, you teach your brain that fear is an effective way to control your behavior. It will continue ratcheting up the fear because it knows it works.
• Ignoring fear and taking action has the opposite effect. You can teach yourself that fear doesn’t impact your behavior. In time, the amount of fear you feel will decrease.

8. Look ahead. If you continue to allow fear to dictate your behavior, what will your life look like in 20 years? How would your life be different if fear didn’t control your actions? Would you rather be a little uncomfortable now or be filled with regret for the rest of your life?

9. View failure as an opportunity to learn. Failure might provide a small sting, but the information you gain is invaluable. A few, small improvements are often enough to turn a failure into a success. Look for the lesson and apply it to your next attempt.

Are You Dooming Yourself to Failure? Beware of These Signs

Much of our happiness and success is the result of our thinking.

So, too, are our failures. And our thoughts are revealed in our self-talk. What you say to yourself during the course of the day largely determines the outcome.

In theory, it’s really pretty simple:

  • Positive self-talk leads to success.
  • Negative self-talk dooms you to failure.

Which one are you setting yourself up for?

Like an evil mist, negative thinking has an insidious way of weaving its wispy tendrils into our thoughts and words. Over time, it becomes a habit – so much so that you might not even notice it. But you can’t help but notice the result: failure, time and time again.

The solution is to develop new habits in your thinking.

Let’s examine several ways to combat these negative thought processes and develop new, positive thoughts that will better serve you.

When you’re good at recognizing these flaws in your self-talk, you’re 90% of the way there:

  1. “I can be happy once I …” It’s a mistake to believe that you need to have or do anything before you can be happy. As soon as the criterion is met, another will simply take its place. It’s great to strive for more, but to make your happiness dependent on such attainment will delay your happiness forever.
  1. The success of other people makes you jealous or resentful. The flaw is thinking that only a limited number of people can experience success.
  • Learn to admire others that are successful. Learn from their success and be happy for them. You can be successful, too.
  1. “I can’t do anything right” or “I’ll never be successful.” Mistakes are simply a learning method of how not to do something. Humans learn largely via ‘failure’. The most successful people have failed far more times than the average person. The difference is that they discover how to pick themselves back up again so they can go on to succeed.
  • Remind yourself of all the times you’ve succeeded at something in the past.
  • For example, learning to talk and walk were difficult endeavors. Consider how many times you failed at both of them and yet you were successful in the end. What if you had the same level of perseverance for everything else in your life?
  1. “Why do these things always happen to me?” Over the long haul, life is remarkably fair. Bad things happen, but they tend to pass and good things take their place. To believe that you are singled out for bad things is a critical error that can guide you toward more negative circumstances.
  2. “I can’t do this.” It’s difficult to do something that you believe you can’t. In reality, you can do nearly anything, given enough time and effort.
  • Can you improve a little bit today? Of course you can, and you can keep improving each day. How could you not be able to do something if you never give up?
  1. “I’ll do it tomorrow (or next week).” We often let ourselves off the hook by putting things off into the future. Successful people are great at doing what needs to be done. They simply do the things others don’t have the nerve to do.
  • Be brave and claim your success today – not someday.
  1. Any other negative self-talk. There’s a simple way to know if your thinking is on track. You should be happy, motivated, and enthusiastic to attack your goals. If you don’t feel this way, then you have negative thoughts in your head. Find and resolve these thoughts.

Monitor yourself continuously for negative thought patterns. When they occur, intentionally turn the thought around into something positive.

Most of your negative thoughts have little reality supporting them – they merely have the power of repetition on their side. You can override that with repetition of new, positive thoughts.

You have the power to transform your life. Imagine what you could do if you banished all negative thoughts from your mind. Nurture yourself with positive self-talk and enjoy the success you deserve!

There are several possible reasons you procrastinate:

  1. Fear of failure. This is perhaps the most common cause of procrastination. After all, you can’t fail if you don’t try. Unfortunately, you can’t accomplish anything without taking action. If you find your life has been stuck in the same place for a long time, you’re most likely afraid of failing.
  • Reframe the idea of failure and realize that it’s one of many possible results. You can choose to learn from that result and apply it to your next attempt. Repeating this process ensures success.
  • Expect to fail. The more often you fail, the more quickly you’ll reach your goals. Avoid allowing an irrational fear to become an obstacle to getting things done.
  1. The need for perfection. Noting in life is perfect. The desire for perfection results in procrastination. Decide how good it really needs to be. There will never be a perfect moment or opportunity. Your results will never be perfect. Nothing needs to be perfect, so just get busy.
  2. Habits that don’t support getting started. Getting started is the hardest part. Some of us have effective habits for getting started on new projects or unappetizing tasks. Others have great habits for putting off these same activities.
  • Develop the habit of taking immediate action on any unpleasant tasks. It can be small and simple, but get started! You’ll often find that a small amount of momentum is enough to do more work than you initially intended.
  1. A lack of self-discipline. Self-discipline is a valuable commodity, especially for the creation of new habits. Use your self-discipline wisely. It’s always in short supply. Use it to develop the habits that will overcome procrastination.
  2. Fear of success. You might think a fear of success is ridiculous, but it’s very common. Success carries several burdens. You become more visible and have more responsibility when you’re successful. You are the victim of higher expectations in the future.
  • Tell yourself that you can overcome the pitfalls of success. Avoid letting a fear of success lead to procrastination.
  1. The inability to deal effectively with discomfort. At the most basic level, procrastination results when the thought of taking action results in more discomfort than you’re capable of dealing with at that moment. It’s only when the pain of not taking action becomes greater than the pain of avoidance that things get done.
  • Some of us are more influenced by that discomfort than others. With practice, you can learn to take action even in the face of great discomfort.
  • Start small and tackle those tasks that are only mildly unpleasant. You’ll find your resistance to those uncomfortable feelings will increase.

Eliminating procrastination from your life results in getting more things done. And those things will be done at a much higher level. If you procrastinate excessively, your entire life suffers. Procrastination results in stress and poor results. Take control of your emotions and rid yourself of the tendency to procrastinate. Your results will be worth the effort!
