The Spiritual Dimensions of the Martial Arts

The Spiritual Dimensions of the Martial Arts

Dreaming 2

BY ROBERT JAMES BURATTI

He who wishes to live in an oriental martial art, rather than to just practice it on a physical level, must so train his consciousness to attain a self-discipline that at last his conscious mind will merge into an identity with the very principle of life itself.
– Maurice Zalle

Amongst the usual loud and predictable offerings at the Australian cinema box office last summer, the Hollywood movie The Last Samurai emerged as an interesting alternative for many curious movie-goers. We were presented with a unique perspective on the cultural interaction between East and West. The film deals almost exclusively with the philosophical, spiritual and martial differences between Japan and America, and presents in grand form the figure of the Samurai, and the way his martial practice has a powerful spiritual dimension to which the West cannot relate.
The traditional practice of Martial Arts is now experiencing a renaissance of sorts, and this is largely due to the fact many people are realising the existence of the esoteric spiritual components behind widely known styles. The Arts are no longer considered remnants of old cultures, but valid and effective methods of achieving spiritual growth. The Martial Arts were actually formulated for this purpose all along.

A Spiritual Heritage

In 475, the Indian monk Bodhidharma arrived in Southern China. On his arrival he moved to the Huan province where he spent nine years in meditation, facing the rock wall of a cave. When the monk emerged from his retreat, he stumbled across a small mountain temple approximately one mile away called Shaolin. Bodhidharma was shocked to see the terrible physical condition of the monks of the Shaolin Temple who practiced long-term meditation exercises which, while making them spiritually strong, totally destroyed their physical health.

Bodhidharma created an exercise regime for the monks involving physical techniques that were efficient in strengthening the body, and eventually, could be used to defend oneself from the inevitable travelling thieves and gangs prominent in the area at the time. The latter benefit was a simple side benefit of the practice. The former was the main objective. The primary concern was always maintaining the physical strength of the monks for the purpose of meditation. These physical exercises developed into what we now know as Martial Arts.
Amongst the myriad of contemporary options for developing the spirit, the Martial Arts remains one of the oldest and most universally effective systems for teaching internal ideas which awaken the spiritual dimension in all parts of life.

A Healthy Diet Is Required For Proper Fitness

When it comes down to it, fitness does more for you than just making you look healthy and more toned. It is also about improving your quality of life and living longer. It’s important to focus your thoughts on changing your life to boost your health. These tips that follow should be acted upon. They will give you inspiration and insight when you’re trying to reach your fitness goals.

TIP! Find an exercise plan that you can stick to. Make sure your exercise routine is enjoyable, so that working out becomes a treat instead of an ordeal.

Decide on a fitness routine that you enjoy, and are confident you can maintain. You will find it easier to maintain a positive attitude if you enjoy your workout routine.

Don’t let that scare you away from getting back in shape. Bicycling makes a great fitness routine, too. Biking to work is inexpensive, enjoyable and a great fitness booster that almost anyone can do. Riding a distance of 5 miles should take no more then thirty minutes on a bicycle. So if your commute to work is 5 miles or less it could be a good option for you. Plus, you will get exercise a second time as you bicycle home.

TIP! You need to set goals if you want to accomplish them. You will stop focusing on how hard it is and push yourself harder to achieve the goal.

Always keep some spice in your exercises and throw in a few new workouts whenever you come across a good idea. This helps to avoid boredom from too much repetition and will also maintain your level of motivation. Your body also needs variety so that you don’t cause a stall in your results due to your body finding the same exercises too easy.

The right posture and form is critical to keep walking exercises from causing injuries. Try walking upright and make sure that you draw back your shoulders. Bend your elbows at a 90 degree angle. Additionally, keep your arms opposite your feet. Touch your heel to the ground first, and then let the rest of your foot roll in a smooth motion with each step.

TIP! Varying your exercises can boost the benefits your body gets from your workouts. If you normally use your treadmill for exercise, you can switch things up by going for a run around your neighborhood.

Maintain a log of the exercise you complete each day. Keep notes on everything, including all exercise activities, food and beverages consumed, etc. Also, note the weather every day. Then, you’ll be able to watch for specific patterns that may be affecting your routines. If you couldn’t work out for a couple days, write down why.

When it comes to weightlifting, doing a number of repetitions using lighter weights serves to give you greater muscle mass than doing fewer repetitions using heavier weights. Gaining muscle is not about lifting the most amount of weight, but how much can you lift for the longest amount of time. This method is utilized by some of the most successful lifters.

TIP! An easy way to lose some weight is by counting calories. Staying aware of your calorie intake will help you understand weight fluctuations on the scale.

When doing repetitions that require counting, start at your goal number and count down. Your motivation will increase and you can focus better on how close you are to finishing the exercise.

Try flexing your glutes when you raise weights above your body. This is a good way to work your buttocks area and also helps you stay safe by making the body work to position itself most effectively. It will help take the load off your spine.

Instead of depriving yourself the many benefits of physical fitness, keep seeking new methods of improving your physical health. Using this advice, you can reach or boost your fitness levels.

  • ‣  Family
  • Reviewing the past is a critical component of creating the future:
  1. What were the highlights from last year? Create a list of at least five positive experiences from the last year. Go with your gut. Anything that fills you with positive emotions can be a highlight. It might have been something as simple as spending a perfect afternoon at the park with your child.

‣ Avoid relying on society’s values when defining your own success. It’s a success if it feels like a success. That may or may not align with conventional measures of success. Decide for yourself.

  • What were the low points and how could they have been avoided? It wasn’t all good. There had to be a few days or experiences you don’t want to repeat. Make a list of them and consider how these experiences could have been avoided. Minimizing the low-points in life is as crucial to your happiness as adding high points.
    • ‣  Should you have been able to foresee the occurrence of these experiences?
    • ‣  How can you prevent a future reoccurrence?
  • What were the best decisions you made over the last year? You undoubtedly made some shrewd decisions last year. What were they? How can you apply this information in the future?
  • What were the worst decision from the last year? Everyone makes mistakes. What were yours? When you look even further into the past, have you made similar bad decisions? Why?
  1. What are five positive habits you’d like to add this year? Consider the long-reaching characteristics of

‣ Diet, exercise, financial, and relationship habits can alter your future considerably.

What are five habits you’d like to eliminate this year? Bad habits can ruin your life. Which of your negative habits would enhance your life the most if you were able to eliminate them.

What are the most important relationships in your life and why? We’re all limited by our personal resources. Good relationships require time and mental effort. It only makes sense to spend those resources on the most important relationships. Also think about past relationships you’d like to renew.

‣ It’s also useful to determine why those relationships are important. Why do you receive from these relationships that makes them important?

Which relationships should you consider ending or minimizing? Just as you’ve accumulated possessions that now clutter your life, you have relationships that need decluttering, too.

  • ‣  Consider all of your relationships, personal and professional. Which of these no longer serve you?

‣  Relationships are never static. It’s common for a relationship to change significantly over time.
Are you aware of your past? Take advantage of your past experiences. Examine your past and apply that information to the future. You’ll find that it’s common to make the same mistakes over and over. End the cycle by thoroughly reviewing your past.
